[Teachldsseminary] Morning Devotionals

I have to confess that we had just terrible devotionals that I quit having
them on a regular basis. We do SM for about 10 minutes first thing each
morning and sometimes I'll assign someone to help teach a SM to they can
remember it. I also will sometimes do something fun at the beginning to
bring in the lesson or an object lesson. My kids know that if they miss the
first ten minutes, they miss out and I usually don't have much of a tardy
problem.

How does everyone get the kids there on time to do a devotional. Seminary
starts at 6:15 and my two kids are there, of course. Two brothers show up
(usually) by 6:20. The other 5 kids dribble in over the next 15 minutes, or
don't come at all. So how do I handle it if the person assigned devotional
is late or absent?

I have begun the past two years with my students "introducing" the scripture
mastery scriptures with the glue-ins from Bro. Alford's resources. This
gives my newbies a chance to learn the format for devotionals, Song,
scripture, thought, testimony or personal observation, and opening prayer
for the day. I usually go to the little books that have a thought for the
day style, I have found them for each of the standard works. In the fourth
quarter, I have the students pick a scripture anywhere from the scriptures.
We use Bro. Alford's glue-ins a lot, so there are usually extra thoughts or
quotes available. I have tried to get some extra pre-class preparation by
having a file with devotionals in it, but I haven't had much success,
especially if there is a lot of preparation-aka handouts- to make. I also
schedule myself in the rotation. It gives the kids a break, and then I can
do hand-outs or anything else I feel we might need. I only have 4 students,
so having me take a day is alright with them. I have also asked my Branch
President to stop by with a devotional. This was great, he liked it and so
did we. You could have YM/YW leaders or parents that can help too.

I got the idea to use the NT Scripture Mastery Magazine Ads as
springboards for devotionals - students could pick a card - like the day
before, or on Fridays for the whole next week - and tell what the photo
brings to mind and how it applies to their own life. Even on the day
of, it can be an impromptu thing if they haven't prepared. The ads are
in our store.
