[Teachldsseminary] Morning Devotionals

What has worked well for our class for the past several years is having the kids take turns each day (we go oldest to youngest) choosing a hymn, telling why they chose it, and then reading the two scripture references listed at the bottom of the hymn. The ones who prepare ahead often have meaningful things to say about the hymn. The ones who forget until that morning can still give a good devotional...most kids have an idea of a hymn they like. We sing a variety of hymns this way...only occasionally will the same hymns get chosen. (I have pointed out to them the index in the back of the hymnbook on page 410 where they can look up the scripture block we are studying that day and find a hymn that goes with it.) I like the idea of listening to the kids read the listed scriptures...it's almost a "family scripture study time"-like atmosphere at the beginning of class. Oh, and one more thing... the devotional-giver says a prayer first thing. I heard Elder Eyring once on a Seminary instructional video say that this invites the Spirit right away into class. So... our order is prayer, say the hymn number and have everyone turn to it, tell why the hymn was chosen, read the listed scriptures, then sing the hymn while the CD is played.
