I would think that you teach the youth that they have the courage as Daniel did to choose the right. In most cases that would be in making everyday decisions about how they will act. Will I cheat in school to get a good grade, do I lie to my parents, do I attend the party where I know there will be drinking, do I swear to be like the other kids, how do I dress both girls and boys, do I keep the word of wisdom, what movies will I go and see, do I keep a prayer in my heart. The protection from the Lions (the world, our peers) comes from our Heavenly Father as we try our best under the circumstances that we find ourselves in to keep His commandments. That is how I would address the story of Daniel and the lion's den because it is a story about courage to live in this world but not be like the world.

I wanted to cover Daniel and the Lion's Den and noted there wasn't anything in the manual. I was reading some suggestions regarding teaching Daniel and they mentioned things like..."What would you do if you lived in a country or time when it was against the law to pray in public and private unless the prayers were printed in an official prayer book? Suppose you were asked to pray in Sacrament Meeting and two government officials walked in just then. How would you pray? The more I started thinking about it the more I realized we can't teach this. We are asking our kids to go against the law and we as LDS obey the law. It is what sets us apart. What do you tell the kids when they ask about choosing between obeying the law and not bowing down to the golden statue or King Neb? Are you guys skipping Daniel and the Lion's Den? I could use some ideas. Thanks, Nancy in Sicily
