Speed chatting is wonderful when you have youth who are reluctant to say anything during a discussion.
Split your class into two groups. One group forms the inner circle, and they stand facing outwards. The second group forms the outer circle, and they stand facing inwards. Have each person identify the person who is now standing in front of them. Now ask a question. Maybe even show a stimulus picture or object that relates to the question. The pairs have about half a minute to talk about their answers. Call out "Change" and the outer circle moves one space to the right. Ask your next question. Change. And so it goes. Save your best, or application questions until last.
When the kids are sitting down again, invite them to report how their partners answered one of the questions you want to highlight. And now you are hopefully springboarded into the main body of your lesson, with the glorious sound of student opinion and experiences ringing in your ears!
