Linda,

Thank you for posting your OT March Madness. My students love it! Last week I posted signs that say, "Coming Soon - March Madness!" The new students were curious about it and my previous students were excited to tell them how much fun they have had.

I have played March Madness for 3 years. I have enough students for 2 teams. When you have the kids switch seats, do you also have them switch teams? Somehow our teams usually tie by the end of the month. There has been no clear winner. I guess that may be a good thing. I think that is because the more engaged students end up on both teams for a while and balance the points. Has that worked that way for you?

Thanks for such a great idea!
Barbara

Subject: [Teachldsseminary] March Madness

Our March Madness starts on Monday and I thought I'd share what I do each
year and my OT questions I use in this month long activity. It's a class
favorite and really helps us get through the last month before spring
break!

Duncan, SC

OT MARCH MADNESS SCRIPTURE CHASE

For the past few years we did a scripture mastery/chase game that I made up
(to wake them up) called March Madness. We did this ongoing for about three
weeks last year during the March Madness basketball tournament. It's fun
and you can slip it in with as little or as much time as you have around
lessons. You can use this with questions in class or with SM chases.

They start out on teams (I had two but you can adapt to how many you want,
it doesn't matter) and we kept up with the scores for the teams for the
whole three weeks, but as you will see, they may be trading teams throughout
the time we do this so it wasn't until the last day that they see who wins.
Also, it changes the seating arrangements, sometimes very temporary!

I also at the beginning had them pick which team and they thought would win
and what the points would be and what their favorite candy bar was. They
put these on a piece of paper that I kept. At the end, the closest one got
their favorite candy bar.

The fun part was, if I used any other game that had points, we just added
them to the total points. For example, I may do a tiddly winks or numbered
chairs game which has big points. Whatever the team has at the end, we
would add it to their scores so the scores can get huge!

Also, I did trivia questions at the beginning of classes and questions about
the lesson at the end. For some of those questions, I'll go back to some
old review games and ask those questions again. If they answer correctly,
they could shoot, if not they had to pick from the Madness glass where I had
the strips below.

No matter what you do, either answering questions from the lesson or using
it with SM this is how we played:

If the team answers correct or first, someone from that team gets a chance
to shoot a nerf ball into a "basket" (my yellow canner is what I used) for
points. I had different free-throw lines at various distances in the room on
the floor with tape (2 point line, 3 point line, 4 point line and 5 point
line) that they can pick where to try from for those points. I give them
two tries to make a basket like free throws.

To make the March madness, I plan on having the ones who shoot from each
team but miss (or can't answer a question) to choose a slip of paper with
instructions on it that they have to follow, to keep things stirred up.
(ideas are listed below) This way, they keep changing who is on what team,
changing the points and do a few off the wall things, making it a March
Madness kind of day. You may think of other ideas. Like I said, when we had
time at the beginning or end of a lesson, we'd play and they really looked
forward to the times we did play it. We were silly! Some days were devoted
to it, some not. It was always in the background and really helps them get
through March which is the hardest month for my kids usually.

Here is what is on the slips of paper from which they will randomly draw: OT
