[Teachldsseminary] Preparation for Next Year's NT Lessons

I hope that I didn't mislead you on my usage of these books. I used them to get a feel for the time, the places, some of the historical events that happened around the life of the Savior. I would never, repeat never, use these books as the basis for lessons or quote from them as fact. They helped me tremendously to get "in the mood" to teach the New Testament, much like the Work and Glory series has set the mood for the Doctrine & Covenants. Sometimes when preparing for a new Seminary year, I get overloaded with doctrine and my brain just shuts down. Being able to read lighter books gives my tired brain a rest.

I hope you'll forgive me for voicing an opinion.
I'm not sure the Lord meant fiction when He taught that we should study out of the best books, . Despite the best efforts of good authors, the nature of fiction is to entertain, not educate, and some of the "facts" that you would be passing along to our youth would be misleading at best, wrong at worst. Students of the scriptures and Church history can easily point out factual errors in all of the books you've mentioned. The Church's policy concerning plays or skits that involve the Savior are a good guideline for preparing to teach the Savior in Seminary: Treat the Lord with the utmost respect, and at no time should the character in the skit or play be given lines other than direct quotes from scripture.

I have used the Kingdom and the Crown series by Gerald Lund and Mary & Joseph by Robert Marcum to prepare for my New testament year. They are fiction but are very similar in style to the work and Glory books. I am currently reading the Life of Jesus Christ From Bethlehem through The Sermon on the Mount by Richard Holzapfel and Thomas Wayment. I have the other books in this series too, they are heavier than the others but ful of information.
