[Teachldsseminary] QUESTION: Peter

Debbie,
I was fascinated during the OT curriculum in seminary to see so many
stories that centered around stones. Each time we came upon one of
those, I gave my students a small stone to carry around in their
pocket that day as a reminder of the principle learned. (Moses
striking the rock to get water, Joshua ordering the tribes of Israel
to carry stones out of the dry Jordan River bed, David/Goliath, the
"stone cut out of the mountain," the urim and thummim as a device to
receive revelation, etc.) You could use some of those references as a
setting for Peter and revelation as a "rock." I recommend an article
in the Jan. 1981 Ensign by Lenet Hadley Read called "All things
testify of Him." There is a section there on the symbolism of stones
in the scriptures. Perhaps you could distribute stones to your youth
as a reminder. You can buy bags of them very cheaply at craft
stores. They sell polished river rocks and also those small,
colorful, glass "stones" that people use in vases with artificial
flower arrangements.
Good Luck
