Here is what I've done in the past and plan to use it again this year. It
really, really helps get through the long winter month of March and my kids
look forward to it!

OT MARCH MADNESS SCRIPTURE CHASE
For the past few years we did a scripture mastery/chase game that I made up
(to wake them up) called March Madness. We did this ongoing for about three
weeks last year during the March Madness basketball tournament. It's fun
and you can slip it in with as little or as much time as you have around
lessons. You can use this with questions in class or with SM chases.
They start out on teams (I had two but you can adapt to how many you want,
it doesn't matter) and we kept up with the scores for the teams for the
whole three weeks, but as you will see, they may be trading teams throughout
the time we do this so it wasn't until the last day that they see who wins.
Also, it changes the seating arrangements, sometimes very temporary!
I also at the beginning had them pick which team and they thought would win
and what the points would be and what their favorite candy bar was. They
put these on a piece of paper that I kept. At the end, the closest one got
their favorite candy bar.
The fun part was, if I used any other game that had points, we just added
them to the total points. For example, I may do a tiddly winks or numbered
chairs game which has big points. Whatever the team has at the end, we
would add it to their scores so the scores can get huge!
Also, I did trivia questions at the beginning of classes and questions about
the lesson at the end. For some of those questions, I'll go back to some
old review games and ask those questions again. If they answer correctly,
they could shoot, if not they had to pick from the Madness glass where I had
the strips below.
No matter what you do, either answering questions from the lesson or using
it with SM this is how we played:
If the team answers correct or first, someone from that team gets a chance
to shoot a nerf ball into a "basket" (my yellow canner is what I used) for
points. I had different free-throw lines at various distances in the room on
the floor with tape (2 point line, 3 point line, 4 point line and 5 point
line) that they can pick where to try from for those points. I give them
two tries to make a basket like free throws.
To make the March madness, I plan on having the ones who shoot from each
team but miss (or can't answer a question) to choose a slip of paper with
instructions on it that they have to follow, to keep things stirred up.
(ideas are listed below) This way, they keep changing who is on what team,
changing the points and do a few off the wall things, making it a March
Madness kind of day. You may think of other ideas. Like I said, when we had
time at the beginning or end of a lesson, we'd play and they really looked
forward to the times we did play it. We were silly! Some days were devoted
to it, some not. It was always in the background and really helps them get
through March which is the hardest month for my kids usually.
Here is what is on the slips of paper from which they will randomly draw:

Subject: [Teachldsseminary] Scripture Mastery ideas
For January and "SuperBowl" season in the U.S. here are two ideas:
1. Bring a large bowl to class (a Super Bowl) and have the students
write on small slips of paper problems that teens struggle with.
(Encourage them to be specific with real problems their friends might
be encountering. All entries are anonymous.) Put the papers in the
bowl. The students take turns drawing out the problems and
suggesting how Scripture Mastery verses might help solve those
problems. Makes a good readiness activity or an exercise for a whole
class period.
2. For a game, mark a football grid on the floor with masking tape
(simply a few parallel lines at even intervals between two imaginary
goals.) Place a football (regulation size or toy size) at the center
or 50-yard line. Divide the class into teams and line them up on the
"sidelines" of your football field. Give a Scripture Mastery clue.
The first team to find it (all team members with their scriptures
open to the verse and standing to indicate they have done it) gets to
move the football one line in the direction of their goal post. Thus
the ball moves back and forth during play. When a team scores a goal
by reaching the end of the field, begin a new round at the 50-yard
line. If you have NASCAR fans in your class you can adapt this game.
Divide into multiple teams or individuals. Give each a toy car
("Hotwheels"). Mark a race track -- oval, straight, figure 8,
whatever -- with masking tape in parallel lines at even
intervals. Give the Scripture Mastery clue and the first team to get
it moves their car forward one marker. Occasionally throw in a
really difficult OT trivia question and the winning team gets to move
forward two places or three depending on the difficulty of the question.
