hmmm, I have always interpreted that passage to mean the decomposition
of the body in the grave, after death.

Therefore, he lives, he dies, his body returns to mother earth, then
lo, the resurrection, and his body is made new again, the spirit
re-enters it, and he stands before the Lord.  Remember that Christ had
not been resurrected yet, so this was a novel idea.

The main point of the passage is to testify of the coming
resurrection, not to identify a certain illness, IMO.

One item of note - even today, maggots are sometimes used in wounds to
clean out the infected flesh.  They are very effective in speeding the
healing process.  yes, yuck, but it works.
