[Teachldsseminary] TEACH:Lamentations

For those of you that haven't taught Lamentations yet, we had a really good
lesson this week. We talked about what "lamentations" means and tried to
get into a discussion about what Jeremiah was lamenting.

I talked about how Jeremiah and other prophets bear the weight of the sins
of their people.

THEN - I had gone through the internet and looked for issues of our day, and
printed them out. I gave one to each student and asked them to take a few
minutes to read their article and then be prepared to present it to our
class (I only have 7 kids.)
The issues covered were:
An article about how the rampant divorce rate affects kids
An article about transgender families and a doctor who has found a way to
delay puberty so that kids can decide which sex they would like to be.
An article about Day of Silence being celebrated on high school campuses
nationwide to support gays and lesbians
An article about danger in schools from guns, assaults, and unsanitary
conditions
An article about how people who make violent movies, TV shows and video
games are targeting our kids and affecting their personalities
An article about how depression and suicide are up dramatically amongst
sexually active teens
An article about a pregnant man

To further emphasize how this affects a prophet, we read from Jacob 1:19 and
Jacob 2:2-3

To finish, I showed two clips that I had downloaded from LDS.org to my
computer lap-top. One was President Monson's conference talk last year
called Tabernacle Memories , where he was his typical upbeat and happy self.

The second one was President Monson's closing talk from this last conference
called "Abundantly Blessed."

His whole demeanor was COMPLETELY different. My kids noticed how his face
was even different. I said "do you see how the sins of this world have
weighed this great man down?" You can see that he completely wears the
mantle of the prophet when you compare these two clips.

I bore my testimony about prophets and President Monson. I asked that we
all commit to not add to President Monson's burden, but that we live our
lives in the Lord's way, not the world's way.

It was a very powerful lesson and one of those times where they were
completely engaged and you could see on their faces that they were
considering something in a way they hadn't done before.
