Write Your Own Psalm
>From Sue Allen - To write their own Psalm I gave the kids the following
instructions:
Assignment: Write your own Psalm. We will start these in class today, but
you may take them home and finish them. They are due at the beginning of
class on Wednesday.
Decide which of the "purposes" the Psalm will have---Praise, Repentance,
Messianic, or Temple/history
Use one or more Hebrew Literary forms: Parallels, Opposites, Symbols,
Cultural References, Emotion, Chiasmus [These are explained in the Inst.
Manual]
Write in the form of the Psalm where each verse has 2 parts.
Begin with the first line of an existing Psalm, or something quite similar.
You may use either Biblical or modern language.
Some ideas for beginning lines:
4. Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness
8. O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
27. The Lord is my light and my salvation;
29. Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty, give unto the Lord glory and strength.
31. In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust:
39. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue:
51. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness:
53. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.
59. Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God:
60. O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us, thou hast been
displeased:
62. Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.
66. Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands:
107. O give thanks unto the Lord for he is good:
