[Teachldsseminary] Chat Reading Incentives

When I taught seminary, I had a daily reading contest between the class
members.
In the Fall, we played football. I had a green poster board drawn up to look
like a football field. Because we live in Columbus, Ohio, one end zone was
the OSU Buckeyes, the other end zone was the BYU Cougars. The class was
split into 2 teams. Each morning, my class president would ask all the
Cougars who read the night before for at least 10 minutes (as set by our CES
director) to stand. The kids were counted (Let's say 7 stood up). Then he
would ask for the Buckeyes to stand if they had read the night before.
(Let's say 4 stand). After counting the kids, the president would figure the
difference and the winning team earned 5 yards for every kids who read - in
this case it would be three kids or 15 yards for the Cougars.
I had a small football that we moved along the field. Eventually, one team
would score a touchdown, and I would bring in warm, cinnamon rolls
(Pillsbury) the next morning for the winning team.
I paired strong students with weaker ones. Reading each night counted if
team mates called each other on the phone and read over the phone. This was
one of the ways I could get my non readers to participate.

We also had a Lego building contest, connect Four contest, Baseball, tennis
balls with rubber bands. About every 6-8 weeks I would change the game. I
think it was fairly successful over the years
