One thing I did when I went to Israel was to ask that our tour bus stop for
a few minutes along the bank of the Jordan River. I collected small stones,
more than enough for my seminary kids.
I put each stone on a 1 inch wooden cube with a message attached: JOSHUA
STONE Joshua 4:6-7
When we got to that part of the OT we talked about how Joshua had 12 men
each carry a large stone from the Jordan River to be placed on the river's
edge as a memorial of how the Lord had blessed them. this memorial was
meant for their children's children. I asked my class what 'Joshua stones'
did they have in their homes that reminded them of the Lord's blessings in
the lives of their family (temple wedding pictures, Eagle Scout awards, YW
medallions, etc.)
I gave each student a small Joshua stone monument to remind them that just
as their parents and grandparents have left Joshua stones for them, they,
too, should be aware of their blessings ad create Joshua stones for their
future children and grandchildren.
I also picked up a 7 stick menorah. They are nearly impossible to find in
the USA, the menorahs here all have the 8 or 9 candle sticks. It was the 7
candle stick lamp that was used in OT times.
A Seder plate is useful when teaching about the Passover.
I also brought back some very inexpensive sling shots that the youth is
Israel use today. When I taught about David as a youth, I took my class
outside in the parking lot of the church and had the kids try to fling
stones at a certain tree along the back of the property. They all missed,,
but it was great fun and gave them an eye opening insight into the talent of
the Israeli youth.
