Also, for those who have a Hebrew Congregation in your town -
I am arranging with the local synagogue to take our students there for a
tour and presentation. They'll be able to learn first hand what the Jews
believe, and they'll get to see and touch the Torah Scrolls and teffilin,
etc. The boys will be required to wear kippot. They'll be able to read
from the siddur (prayer book), and hopefully the chairman (they don't have a
Rabbi here) will chant from the Torah Scroll. And I usually attend a Yom
Kippur service - which this year is Friday night and Saturday Sept. 21 and
22nd. It's not appropriate to take the students, but usually they welcome
serious visitors. For those of you who live in larger centres, you can get
their entire calendar and attend all their services whenever you want.
Unfortunately, here they have just a small congregation and so only observe
one or two services at the synagogue. It's difficult for them to get a
minyan (prayer quorum), so they don't have daily services anymore. Sad,
really.
