Whenever I've taught this lesson, the question that students always ask is
"Why did Abraham have to be tested if God already knew his heart?" I point
out that sometimes there are lessons that we need to know for
ourselves--that we can be trusted to stand for and do right at all times and
in all places. Here in the States there is a phrase that is printed on
every paper money or coin we have. I'll ask them what that phrase is. It's
"In God We Trust." Then we'll discuss what it means to trust in God. I
then have the students try to imagine that on the flip side of the money the
phrase continues, "In Us God Can Trust" and will ask them how can we prove
to God that He can trust in us? This generates a lot of discussion and gets
them thinking about the choices they make.
