WHAT IS THE SUBJECT?
100 Elder Hilbig gave us several questions we need to ask ourselves
including: Do I spend more time with sports than church attendance or
callings? If I have a free day, do I attend the temple or mall? Surf
internet or service? Do I read newspaper religiously but not my scriptures
daily? He then quoted 1 Thessalonians 5:19 that was the subject of his
talk. Turn there and read what his subject was. Quench not the spirit.
200 Elder Hales said that if we prepare for personal revelation, we will
be like Samuel who was able to answer the Lord. Find what Samuel said in 1
Samuel 3:9. Speak Lord for thy servant heareth.
300 Elder Kopischke gave several suggestions to the youth in using a
certain book including studying it along with your scriptures and using it
for FHE to teach your family. What book was he talking about that was the
subject of his talk? Preach My Gospel
400 Sister Beck spoke about Eve, Sarah, Rebekah and Mary who were all
foreordained to be mothers before children born to them. She also mentioned
Hannah who prayed fervently for her child, and that they all valued
motherhood. What was the subject of her talk about mothers? Being mothers
who know.
500 Elder Costa quoted the Proclamation on the family and said fathers
are given responsibility to provide for family, not just food and material
things but what else should they provide? Teachings of the gospel.
QUESTIONS ANSWERED?
100 Elder Falabella of the 70 asked the question why he is a member of
the church. His talk consisted of three reasons. Name one: Families are
eternal, priesthood gives us blessings, and his testimony of Christ. These
reasons and others I am a member of only true church.
TEACHER MOMENT: Tell story of how his family changed when they joined the
church and his widowed father took them to the temple: Missionaries taught
us missionaries of restored gospel and eternal families. We were baptized
and my father became a district president. My father wanted us to journey
to temple, 15 days journey 4800 miles. A journey filled with difficulties
and setbacks. Buses, roads in poor conditions, and not knowing the route.
We arrived to Mesa Arizona and then we could see the house of the Lord,
gleaming and beautiful. I remember the joy which filled out hearts. We
broke out in songs and praising. Later in temple we knelt as a family with
certain that our mother, though absent was our mother forever. We felt
peace knowing we were an eternal family. We have riches of eternity, we were
rich.
200 Elder The of the 70 said there was a very interesting question asked
by Cain in Genesis 4:9. Turn to that scripture and tell us the question
asked by Cain. Am I my brother's keeper?
300 Elder Wirthlin asked the question, what quality defines us best as
members of the church. What was his answer? Love and charity. "We are a
people who love the Lord with all our heart, souls and minds and love our
neighbors as ourselves."
400 Pres. Eyring said that when his children small, he was prompted to
write down experiences. He realized he was supposed to record experiences
for his children to read someday. Before he wrote, was question did he ask
himself that was the basis of his writing? Have I seen the Hand of God
reaching out to our children or family that day?
500 Elder Callister said if you want to know that you know that you know
a price must be paid and you alone must pay the price. What question should
we ask and pray for? Our testimonies.
TEACHING MOMENT: He said, "There are proxies for ordinances but no
proxies for testimonies."
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
100 Elder Ballard said since 1997, dramatic increase in worldwide
inquiries about the church. He said we should prepare a short list of
"talking points" so we can briefly answer questions about the church. Those
talking points should be in four areas and they all began with F. Name one:
Facts, faith, families and fruits.
200 Elder Cook, the new apostle, said Pres. Hinckley extended his call
to serve last Thursday afternoon. He said that he's had sleepless nights
and much prayer. His spirits was buoyed up because he knew Pres. Hinckley is
the prophet and members will pray for him but he feels inadequate. Then he
told us what the most important qualification was in order to serve? What
did he say? One must be comfortable in bearing witness of the Savior.
300 Elder Bednar spoke about doing good and becoming better. He said
it is the atonement of Christ that provides the cleansing and redeeming
power to overcome sin and helps us to become better than we ever could than
by relying on our own strength. He then quoted from our SM in Psalm 24:3-4
of two things we need to strive to have. Find the scriptures and name those
two things. Psalms 24:3-4 Clean hands and a pure heart.
400 Elder Uchtdorf asked us what is means to endure to the end? He said
when he was a young boy he thought it meant to stay awake until the end of
church meetings. As a teenager he thought it mean the efforts of the elderly
to hang in there to the end of their lives. What did he say enduring to the
end means? Enduring to the end: It means patience, continuance in well
doing, doing the works of righteousness, sacrifice and hard work, trust our
father in heaven and make wise choices, paying tithing, honoring temple
covenants and serving the Lord willingly and faithfully.
500 Elder Zivic spoke about the day he was baptized and how his older
brother wanted to wrestle him. He told him not to touch him because he was
trying to do what? Not sin.
TEACHER MOMENT: He realized he could not remain sinless for my whole life,
but he could sincerely repent and try to live his ordinary life in an
extraordinary manner.
STORY TOLD!
100 Sister Cook from the YW told the story about her older brother's
example that blessed his family. When he was on his mission, he sent them a
7 page typed written letter and told them to read it together. What was his
letter about that blessed their family? To set a goal to be sealed to you
for time and eternity. Decide and pray together as a family for a decision
to make changes to go to temple. She said, "we established goals and
patterns of righteousness and when my brother returned, we went to the
temple and were sealed as a family."
200 Elder Tonorio spent 15 years as a recorder in the Mexico City
Temple. However, his own father was not active n the church. Tell us the
story of the plan he and his children had to get his father coming back to
church and ultimately to the temple. Plan involved his children: Every
Sunday his dad would return home after taking wife to church. He Asked his
children to ask Grandpa to come to church and hear them bear testimonies.
He knew he would make an excuse so he and his wife were waiting in another
room. He told the grandchildren he hadn't taken a shower yet. They started
yelling "Shower, shower." Then what they expected to happen - grandpa
came and stayed for service and his heart was softened and from that Sunday
on never missed church. At age of 78, they were sealed as a family. He
knows he can be reunited with his parents in all eternity.
300 Elder Uchtdorf spoke about the bad news and fearful times we live
in. He told the story of being a small boy living in Germany in WWII. He
said during the coldest winter of 1944, with his father in the military they
tried to reunite at the home of his grandparents. He said there were
bombing raids at night and air attacks in the day. He said the memories of
those days were of darkness and hopelessness. He was living in the rubble
of postwar Germany. Tell the rest of the story that changed his attitude and
outlook on life. He said that in the middle of this despair, their family
learned of the gospel and message of Christ. This message made all of the
difference and lifted them up. Life was still horrible but the Gospel
brought light, hope and joy in their lives. Plain and simple truth of
Gospel enlightened their minds. It helped them look at themselves and world
around them from a different viewpoint. Christ and our membership in his
church are great reasons to rejoice.
400 Elder Cook told us to listen closely to the words of the prophet.
Then he told a story about a drought in the land of Tonga. Tell the story
of how and where they found fresh water. Tongan men discovered some fresh
water from island into the sea. Men dive off boat and fill containers with
fresh spring water. Water was pure, fresh and life saving in drought
condition. Not easy to find.
TEACH ADD: An old Tongan patriarch wanted to know everything the prophet was
teaching.
500 Pres. Monson repeated the story of giving a talk 38 years ago in a
general conference about his boyhood friend Arthur Patton who died and what
he wanted to his mother in answer to the question, Will he live again? What
is the rest of that story that is a miracle that happened in 1969? Having
no idea who was speaking or what speak about, LDS neighbors of Ms. Patton
where she moved invited her to their home to listen to conference. She
accepted invitation and listened to the very session where I directed my
remarks personally. During first week of May 1969, he received a letter
from Ms. Patton. She said, "I don't know how to thank you for comforting
words both when he died and again in your talk." It was not a coincidence
that I gave that talk or that she listened to that talk. I know God was
mindful of her needs and needed to hear that message.
OT SCRIPTURE MASTERIES
100 Elder Condie spoke of one of the promises for paying tithing as
"open you the windows of heaven" from an OT SM on tithing. Find OT SM did
he quote from. Malachi 3:8-10.
200 Pres. Hinckley told us that we were living to see the miracle of the
prophecy given of the stone cut without hands. Fine the OT SM he quoted?
Daniel 2:44-45
300 Elder Wirthlin spoke about love and said that when the Pharisees
asked the Savior which is greatest commandment in the law, when they heard
this answer they must have been troubled when he said " love thy God with
all thy heart and second like unto it - love thy neighbor as thyself." Find
OT SM also tells us to love our neighbor. Leviticus 19:18
400 Elder Scott spoke about how many prophets, like Abraham saw the
vast creation of God and we can now see far into the universe and see
innumerable planets and systems, but he said they are all numbered unto God.
Then he quoted this OT SM of God's work. Find and read the SM he quoted.
Moses 1:39
500 Elder Nelson spoke on how the Bible and the Book of Mormon are
witnesses to each other. He quoted Isaiah 29:4 about the Book of Mormon
whispering from the dust. Find the other OT SM that he quoted regarding
the book of Mormon. Ezekiel 37:15-17
FUNNY THING!
100 (funny yet sad thing). Elder Falabella told the story that his
family struggled when he was young and were very poor. He needed new shoes.
What was his story about his shoes? One day he said to his father, "daddy,
why don't you buy me shoes. Worn out and hole in my shoe." My father
cleaned and shined my shoes. But he still could see his big toe through a
big hole. Then his father put polish on my big toe and it shined like his
shoes.
200 Bishop Edgley said that being a "go-to" church member in Utah, and
having your ward also your neighbors that it only takes 5 minutes to know
what is happening to someone. He said it could be considered intrusive but
it also is a source of strength. He said at when his neighbor family had a
tragic car accident that the ward knew about it before the police and
members did many things very quickly to help out. What funny thing he said
they would have done? They would have given the dog a bath if they had one.
300 Elder Zivic got up and apologized in case something happened to him
that had never happened to someone giving a talk in General conference. What
was it that got a laugh? No one has ever died while giving a talk at
general conference.
400 Elder Packer spoke about an elder lady he home taught who was from
Brigham City Utah. When she was a little girl, she Brigham Young came to
their town. As part of the festivities, all of the primary children were
dressed in white to sing and to throw rose pedals in front of his carriage.
What did she do or say that brought laughter? She threw a rock instead and
said, "He ain't one bit better than my grandpa."
500 Pres. Hinckley said that we live in an interesting world. We love to
listen to music or movies or plays over and over. Then he said what that got
a laugh? He is expected to come up with something new every time he speaks.
DOUBLE JEOPARDY
OTHER SCRIPTURES SPOKEN!
200 Elder Packer quoted D&C 1:16 and said that each member in the
church is expected to accept the call to serve. We have no professional
clergy but we are set apart and when we have a calling, we will receive
revelation that belongs to that calling and not given to others. What did he
say the Lord called ordinary members of the church in D&C 1:16? "Weak
things of the earth."
400 Elder Condie spoke on some of the things the Lord has promised us
including forgiveness of sins, opening the windows of heaven, finding great
treasures, being unspotted from the world, and the Holy Ghost will be out
constant companion as we let virtue garnish our thoughts. He quoted D&C
82:10 which he said we can rely on. What does that D&C SM say? "The Lord is
bound when ye do what I say but when ye do not what I say, ye have no
promise."
600 Pres. Hinckley said in the 177 years since the organization of the
church, we marvel of what has already happened. When organized in 1830 - 6
members only handful of believers in an unknown village. He said Joseph
must have been stunned when he heard the prophecy Angel Moroni quoted in JSH
1:33. What was that prophecy? "That my name should be had for good and
evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both
good and evil spoken of among all people."
800 Elder Tenorio told the story of the birth of his first daughter. He
was working in Mexico City and his wife was at her parents when she had the
baby. All was great and he passed out chocolates to coworkers. The next
day, though he found out the baby had died. He talked to his wife and asked
her if she believed what was said in D&C 137:10. Find that scripture and
tell us the truth it talks about.
TEACHER MOMENT: The rest of the story: they did believe it and he
continued to pass out chocolates and because of his belief a coworker came
into the church. He also quoted a SM on turning our hearts? Anyone know
what it is? Malachi 4:5-6

from the life of the Savior and the New Testament that backs up our true
belief of the Godhead. Name one: Intercessory prayer, Baptism, Mount of
transfiguration, Martyrdom of Stephen. TEACHER MOMENT: What the Savior
directly said: "The son cannot do anything of himself but what he has seen
