[Teachldsseminary] Teach by the Spirit & Exodus 20

I don't consider object lessons like this fluff, just variety for teaching
activities which I know my class needs to stay more focused. If you are
prompted to use them, they can help students remember the concepts. I now
mine are very visual and hands on learners.

I did two today in talking about the 10 commandment. I had some sleepy eyes
before we got to them but everyone became invested in the lesson and more
awake afterwards!

For Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vein, I gave each student
two Oreo cookies. I had them eat only the white middle and then smile to the
person on either side of them. I told them that is like obeying this
commandment, your teeth stay way and clean as does your mouth. Then they
ate the other one whole and smiled. They had darker teeth and cooking
crumbs. This is like the dirt that comes out of mouths of those who take
the name of the Lord in vein, either through speech or by not keeping
covenants made!

The other one was for the Sabbath day.
I had a scoop of ice cream and said this is like the Sabbath Day, something
we look forward two. I then put on catsup, mustard, salsa, etc on top of
the ice cream for toppings. I told them that we all love catsup and mustard
and salsa, but not on ice cream. There are some activities great for other
days but not appropriate for the Sabbath and we should coil in disgust at
the thought of doing those like we do on the toppings on ice cream.

Then I went into Pres. Kimball quotes about the Sabbath Day. Again they woke
up and participated.

I pray for the spirit to help me to come up with various teaching ideas so
they can be more invested in class and enjoy it. I've used a lot of great
ideas from here, but it's been through feeling prompting that it would be
good for my class or not.

Something must be working as my 9 come almost every day and on time! I have
heard them say they feel they may miss something if they are not there.

Of course most of my lesson is in the scriptures and discussing the words
and meanings and sharing insights but the other stuff helps a lot (like the
Passover we did last week).

I guess some would consider this "fluff" , but it was quite fun and
effective anyway.
We were discussing Satan's counterfeits (Pharaoh'a magicians) and I was
talking about being familiar with the true sacred things of God so that you
can more easily recognize Satan's tricks, etc. Anyway, I opened up in front

of them a box of Jelly Bellys. (The night before I had opened the box and
added some Bertie Botts every Flavored Beans - just the yukky ones - I put
only enough beans back into the box as I have students (36) then I resealed
the box with glue). I emptied out the box into a bowl and said that for
those who are familiar with Jelly Bellys they will easily be able to know
which beans are which flavour. I had them each take a bean out of the bowl,

but not to eat it yet. After every one rec'd a bean I then informed them
that there were counterfeits among the beans, but because they weren't
watching for them and being wary of evil, they didn't recognize it. I then
had them all pop the beans into their mouths. I had some kids running for
the garbage real quick. It was hilarious.

ps: I also made up the plague jars and they are a big hit.
