[Teachldsseminary] QUES: Prince of Egypt

There is a new movie out there called the Ten Commandments, I just rented it and it is wonderful, very well done, I only saw the first part and it is more or less accurate, it is fun to watch it and then go back to Exodus to see if it matches. I enjoyed it a lot and recommend it , I think that you can rent it at Blockbuster.

I looked high and and low for a church approved video about the Exodus as well, with no luck. Interesting that the church doesnt have something. Today we had quite a discussion about whether or not Pharoah was killed in the Red Sea. Because so many of my students had seen the animated version, in which he was not killed, they truly believed that he had survived. The scriptures teach differently. And I think in the Charlton Heston movie not all of the plagues are depicted, but I may be wrong. Anyway, I thought it was interesting how they truly believe what they see in a movie...even if its just a cartoon. I have done alot of research today so that I can talk to them more about the Pharoah actually being killed in the Red Sea. But...I love the discussion and that they are thinking...and that they will ask questions, etc. Makes for a great Seminary day!! Thanks for the info...Terisa

Today I used the "burning bush" scene to illustrate Moses' feelings of unworthiness and how seeing the Lord changed him physically and mentally. My kids really noticed how Charleton Heston's hair and beard turned gray after seeing the Lord on Sinai and we discussed how being in the Lord's presence changes you. I am only using one scene from the prince of egypt, it shows all the plagues. I told my kids they may borrow my copy of the 10 commandments for personal use if they so desire. Before I started showing these clips, I discussed with my kids how the world sees this story and that the scriptures are the best place to get the whole story. As has been discussed in this forum before, you have to do what fits for your students and your pocket book. Right now the only video I have from the church is from 1994. I have looked
throught the distribution catalog many time to find church produced material but there seems to be a shortage on the Old Testament. I have also used BYU's collection of videos, but for this particular situation, these movies fit my needs.

Are these movies (The Ten Commandments and Prince of Egypt) approved for use in Seminary?
