Thank you for sharing what you did in class. I think it is a wonderful idea to share the truth and the sources that it comes from. PBS might be held in high esteem by the community but in the end they need supporters to function and therefore will present that which will draw viewers who may donate versus presenting unbiased facts that tell only the truth. The truth will be found in the scriptures and in the words of the Prophets. Some of my students have been very upset by the program. Joseph was told his name would be known for good and evil and that certainly is what has transpired. I have tried to reassure my students by telling them that this is nothing different than what has been presented before. Men will most certainly have opinions, it is the truth that matters and the truth comes from God.

Thanks again for sharing. I think I will share it with my class if they are still uncertain what to think tomorrow.

What has been your student's reaction to the PBS documenarty? After the first night I decided to use the information in the Institute Manual on the Mountain Meadow Massacre instead of the lesson on Joseph Fielding Smith that I had prepared. I was glad I did because the students who had watched it were very confused and wondered what in the world it was all about. They were satisfied that it was a bad chapter in the history of the church but not nearly as bad as the documentary made it sound.

I'm not sure I should call it a documentary though. It seemed like at least half of it was not based on truth and they spent much more time with dissodents than with strong, active members who could give a better picture of our beliefs.

It has been said that anti-Mormon literature can bring people into the church so I'm sure this "documentary" will have a good effect on some people. I thought it was also interesting that the ones who were speaking out against the church didn't say the church was bad, just the one instance where they had the problem. I think many viewers will agree with our stand against homosexuality and that women shouldn't hold the priestood, etc.

It was kind of cute this morning, one of the girls said "When they were talking about Brigham Young last night he sounded like OUR Brigham Young". We had talked yesterday about how they made him sound like a yes man with no opinion on the first night. After studying him this year we grew to love the "Lion of God".

Just my thoughts. I was wondering what ya'll thought of it and how the students who watched it in your units reacted.
