Sukkot is a Jewish Festival that commemorates the 40 years of wandering in
the wilderness of the Children of Israel. Jewish families today build
sukkahs (booths) outside (or sometimes smaller versions inside) that they
are required to spend as much time in as possible in during the 7 day
holiday- if nothing else, they at least eat inside them. There are very
strict regulations about what they are made out of, their dimensions, etc.
Sukkot is a harvest festival and so the sukkahs are built from items found
in nature (branches, leaves, etc.) and there must be an opening at the top
so you can see the sky.
A shofar is the rams horn that is blown at special times during the year.
During Rosh Hashanah (Head of the Year) it's blown 100 times each day.
It's blown like a trumpet and has been known to symbolize a call to
repentance and also to herald in a king or special event.
