I don't do this constantly, but fairly often I will assign the
students a block of scripture, give a very brief description of who is
speaking or what the situation is, and give them time to read and discover.
I have printed a set of "discovery" statements for them to fill in the
blanks when we are searching:- -I feel________, This reminds me of
____________, This reminds me of a Scripture Mastery ___________, I found a
principle!, I see the Plan of Salvation here _______, etc. There are 10-12
discovery statements.
I might even recommend several of these discovery statements as
encouragement for them, but the students can choose any discovery statement
that appeals to them. I call these "Seminary Goodies", because it is more
than what the scripture is About, it is what the scripture is teaching you.
Then, when we are sharing our Goodies with each other, I will toss a small
piece of candy or whatever to each student who made a discovery.
It's taken a while to get them used to this, and some are much
better at this than others. BUT---I am always amazed at the principles and
related scripture topics the students find for themselves! If I am going to
do this, I make sure I have my own pen out to mark my scriptures with their
insights!!
