I've just about got them all complete. I'm just numbering them now. There
are 70 cards. This is the way I'm going to use them:
These are not scripture mastery flashcards - these trading cards are used as
incentive to reward the students for their participation and/or
accomplishments. I'm using them in place of the "point" or "buck" rewards
I've used previously. Same concept, only more interactive and of course
they can be teaching tools as well.
Each student will get a written list of all the cards in the set, so they
know what cards are available to collect. The cards will be numbered so
they can keep track of which ones they still need and/or want to trade for.
They'll be printed on cardstock paper in color - you could print in black
and white to save ink if you like. I'll print a set for each student -
maybe a couple of extra sets as well.
I haven't quite decided how they will store their cards. I originally
thought that the cards would have a hole punched into them so that they
could be kept on a hinged ring that each student would receive. But, now
I'm thinking I might look into getting some of those trading card plastic
sheets so you can display several cards on both sides of a page, and the
pages can be kept in their binder/journals. This way they can see the blank
spots and where each card belongs in the set. I'll have to research this
further, as my cards are sized differently than the official trading cards.
The ring idea would be the cheapest by far. The cards will not be in
chronological order, but rather they'll be numbered according to the special
sets (see below). Any cards not belonging to a set will be numbered
randomly, in no special order.
The students will be able to pick a card each time they say a prayer,
present a devotional, have perfect attendance for the week, complete a
written assignment or handout (I give out many during the year that are
optional - like crossword puzzles and worksheets, etc.), recite a SM from
memory, they'll get one on their birthday, I might give everyone a card for
a class effort, the team that wins a game will be able to pick 2 cards each
and the teams that don't win get to pick one card each, etc. I'll play it
by ear.
The cards will be covered, so they won't know which card they will get.
This way they'll have to work together with their classmates and trade for
the ones they need or want. The trading probably won't start until they
have quite a few cards collected.
I thought that I might put the cards in backwards in a slotted poster board,
but it would be more fun to wrap each card in cellophane or something
similar - more like the official trading cards. I might (if I have time)
find some thin non-transparent wrapping of some kind and wrap each card,
sealing with tape, and then print some labels to put on them - like: "Old
Testament Trading Card". It's pretty much up to you how you want to give
them out.
There are approximately 14 weeks or 70 days of Seminary in our Fall
semester, so I'll give them lots of chances to pick cards.
There will be prizes (little dollar store items or treats) for:
- collecting all ten tribes
- collecting all the female cards
- collecting all the maps
- collecting all the prophets
- collecting all the kings
- collecting all the judges
- and of course for collecting the entire set
