On the subject of how to reward students to attend/participate in Seminary,
our ward has had the tradition of an auction 4 x a year. The items are
donated by parents, just dollar store stuff. The kids receive either
"Mormon Bucks" for the Book of Mormon and DC years, or else
"shekels"--plastic old world type coins for the Old and New Testament years;
for attendance, participation, etc. I gave large rewards for memorizing SM,
reading the assigned scriptures for a certain length of time, or giving a
Book of Mormon to a non-member.
The auction idea worked really well when we did the DC last year--the day
before one of the auctions, the Bishop came in as "Bishop Partridge" and we
did a whole (surprise!!) consecration activity first. Then the next day
they bought their auction items with whatever play money they received as
their consecration stewardship from the Bishop. This really caused a lot of
conversation about the law of consecration and what it would be like to live
it in real life.
I also finished the year with a Pioneer Trek board game, and they needed
to use their play money to buy the "supplies" needed for the game.
This year, I think at least one auction will be a scripture chase
activity--whoever finds the scripture(s) first can come up and buy whatever
item they want first; then the second person can purchase, etc. I'd like to
find an Old Testament game for an auction activity. The comment on creating
character cards for them to collect sounds like fun, too. That would not be
money, but cards that need to be collected for a reward.
I'm interested in the ideas other seminaries have.
