4 years ago, I let everyone in the class try at least once. As I have
mentioned before, the only person who really mastered it was the tuba
player. The trumpet player and the French horn player never could get
much out of it. I was thinking this time that when you get to a place
in the scripture where a shofar will be played, you send it home with a
student to practice the night before and come prepared the next day to
blow it when the scripture is read. That way the student gets some
practice and will be on time. A double bonus.

Subject: [Teachldsseminary] Blowing the Shofar
I purchased a shofar online and received it a few days ago. Several of
you remarked that it was very difficult to get a get a sound out of it
and boy, were you right! I made numerous attempts with no luck
whatsoever. I was hoping that I'd have a musician in my class with
trumpet experience :) Then I googled "How to blow a Shofar" and came up
with several websites. The one that helped most was:
http://www.wikihow.com/Blow-a-Shofar I did everything he said (I didn't
try the pasta suggestion) and was able to get it to make a decent sound
on my second try. It was great advice. I'll be teaching freshmen this
year and I know they'll want to try it out. With these instructions,
I'm sure they'll have success (perhaps annoying the other teachers in
the building, though!)
