[Teachldsseminary] QUESTION: Makeup Work

Our seminary supervisor here has had us do exactly as you suggested. We have had reports on prophets presented to the class, reports handed in on Conference Talks dealing with a subject that deals with the course of study we on on at the time. Work out of the student manual is suggested as well, or a combination of the two can be used. Another thing we do for make up work is to have the students attend General Conference and Priesthood or YW general meeting and take notes to give to us. I used to think it quite unfair that they got credit for make up work when they should be there anyway. What about those who go because they know they should be there? Then I had a parent tell me that he could never get his son to attend all sessions until I assigned it as make up work. Maybe that's the point.
I agree, and am often frustrated, with the inequality between dedicated students and those who slide in late, or not at all, every day. I have a couple of students who are very dedicated, and others who are only willing to barely get by. We can't mark them absent as long as they show up to class and they know it. I am trying to figure out a way to quietly reward those who are valiant. I know that they will have a great reward for their valiant service, but I would also like to let them know how much I appreciate it right now. If any one has any ideas I would appreciate them.
I hope you figure out something to do that you both feel good about.

I have a Senior who missed the last half of her Old Testament year. I was
just informed by our CES office that if she does makeup work for the time
missed she will be able to graduate with a 4 year certificate.
Earlier in the year I informed our local CES of the problem hoping to avoid
problems at graduation time and asked what I could do. I was told the new
"policy" for our area was she could NOT make up the work unless it was done in
the year of the particular course of study. My Senior understood...was
sad...but was mature and understanding. So I have not worried about it. I was a
little put off by this "policy" because I felt it left no room for
"repentance" AKA "makeup work" or for circumstances beyond a student's control. (What
about the parable of those who did not work as long in the vineyard receiving
the same reward as those who have been working the entire time?) NOW it seems
that policy has been reevaluated and I have to come up with makeup work for
this busy Senior so she can graduate in less than a month with her 4 year
certificate. She is more than willing to do the makeup work...but as we all
know that last month is brutal on Seniors.
Can any of you help me with appropriate makeup work for the last half of the
OT year? I have only been teaching for 2 1/2 years and I have never had to
come up with makeup work for a half of a year and have the student complete
it in so short a time. I had thought of having her do a "term" paper or
project on a prophet and some of his teachings from the last half and then have
her present it to the class. Doing the last half of the SM seems a bit much
and so I am having a hard time considering that. I am at a loss as to what to
do or what seems appropriate.
I am in a quandary because I have a student this year who has done makeup
work for flagrant tardiness and multiple absences and the effort he has made
has been extremely poor on his part and yet our CES office says I am supposed
to give him credit for the days missed. At this point I intend to give him a
P for a grade, but that hardly seems fair when all my other students,
including his brother, make it there at 5 AM every morning and make that astounding
effort to be in class on time and do the work there.
I just do not understand this idea of makeup work. I know it gives the
honest/caring student a chance to recover lost time but for those others who are
sliding by making a slipshod effort and receiving the same credit, well--it
makes me crazy!
So basically what I'm asking is: do you have any ideas that will not be
overly taxing on this ideal student who has done above and beyond all her other
years but only missing this OT half year?
