I have 23 ninth graders and 11 of them have memorized JSH 1:15-20 so far
this year, with 6 more actively getting closer. I think all but 2 or 3 will
pass it off by years end. The best I've had in 3 years of teaching Doctrine and
Covenants/Church History.
I have them read it outloud three times a day. It is easy, since it reads
as a story. I also have the first letters printed out on a sheet if they need
it, but most who have thought they did need it, when they began, found out
they really didn't. Reading it outloud reinforces the words to their memory
two ways. First, they are reading the words, second they are saying it
outloud so they can audibly retain it. It works!
I also have promised them "A Cookie As Big As Their Face" when they pass it
off for two witnesses. It is a homemade cookie of their choice baked in a
10-inch cake pan. It equals 2.5 dozen cookies each. Chocolate chip is the
current favorite. They call it the "Got Cookie Club".
They memorize the scripture to the best of their ability, earn the cookie,
and then they share it with family and friends, both member and non-member.
Like the gospel, they take the cookie (word) and share the "sweetness" with
those around them!
