Rebus's are great! Pictures substituted for words. I write the verse on the
board. If we do 2 or 3 verses I usually get the rolling chalkboard from
another classroom and use that plus my chalkboard in the classroom. Or you
could already have the verses prewritten on poster board or something else and
you could just use strips of paper to draw on and put them over the words.
We've learned many verses this way. I have 4 in my class that are there on time
for SM every morning. (2 come in later--but that's a whole different
issure!) We do not have Fridays to work on SM, our CES here has asked us to move
right through the manual taking 5 minutes every morning for SM. It has been a
huge challenge. I get involved with the rebus's and do it as well. I always
like to be the one to learn the verse first then everyone seems to think if
she can do it...I can too. We try and repeat the verse after every 3rd or
4th clue. We have a great time with this. My class is very small too but your
challenge is a painful one and I definitely feel your pain. My class is very
quiet...so doing anything that is rowdy does NOT go over at all.
STUMP THE TEACHER might also be a good one to use. Your student could use
the Scripture Index using words from the hymns to use as clues or using the
topical guide or any cross-reference or key words and try to stump you,
pantoming, etc. Everytime she stumps you she gets a point. Everytime you stump her
you get the point. Candy works as rewards...bubblegum, anything she
particularly likes. It works for the real competitive kids and it could work with
one student and it also works with my shy ones
You probably already do these two things....but I like you am challenged as
far as knowing just how to make this a fun creative rewarding thing for my
kids--but hey, we've only got one more verse to go and we will have them all
memorized! Whew! Our chart is full of stickers!!!
Good luck!
