Well, my class is starting to show it's true colors. They have the
reputation of being the worst class in the district and have been through
numerous teachers. I thought we were doing well. I use a lot of object
lessons and activities to keep them involved and they seemed to be
responding positively. Today they decided to push! During the lesson, the
boys started off just talking. I called them on it in a way that has worked
for me in the past and they settled down. Then they started throwing things
at each other, punching each other and trying to stick pencils in each
other's ears. Finally got that settled down and one of the girls got up and
started playing the piano. (During all of this the rest of the class is
ignoring me totally and off discussing their own things) I sat them all down
and gave them a very stern lecture about how Heavenly Father was the one who
has called us togehter for seminary. That it is an inspired program from
Him. I told them that it is my job to teach and I am here to do that because
He has asked me to. I also told them that their job is to learn, I have no
control over that - it is their responsibility and whether they decide to
come and learn or not, I expected them to have respect for Heavenly Father,
His programs and His servants (me). Then I ended the lesson with prayer.
They left quietly and some of them thanked me for the lesson but I have no
illusions. We're in for a rocky time. I remember reading here about a lesson
with sugar, skittles and lollies about what we get out of seminary but I
can't find it. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Can you re-explain
how it went? Thanks.
Dana
