[Teachldsseminary] Sweet dreams in EMS

The coloring story reminded me of one of my own. I had the freshmen class
(this one is all seniors now) and had a ton of bad/silly clipart for the OT
and two of my young men would color their pages scribble style like a 1
year-old, black and brown and dark green to nearly obliterate the picture.
We posted the pictures on one of the boards with their names until we had
more to exchange out. Nothing changed the whole year in their coloring style
but today neither of them hides, walks away or acts disinterested in a short
conversation, they know I loved them then and must assume correctly I still
do. Both of them are the more shy type as well so I fully agree with the
love part. And they are not even in my ward.
There are some basic expectations once someone shows up but a snooze here or
there shouldn't become a power struggle. However, until he actually says in
his own words and mouth "leave me alone" keep including him without singling
him out for "extra" participation. I entered freshmen year at 5' tall and
ended my Junior year 6' tall and I was tired during those growth spurts.
Which gives me an inspiration.....
We have small painted picket fence boards mounted to the wall in our kids'
rooms so we can measure their growth. They are movable in case they trade
rooms or we move to another house.
What if seminary students had a measuring stick on the wall where they not
only did a stature mark but a spiritual growth mark? Each scripture mastered
is half inch or 1/4 so that they end each year as a spiritual giant even if
they don't fulfill all scriptures. Teachers could add a mark above the last
one as a kudos for a testimony shared or quality choice made that they
share. Many ideas to play off of with that one. The student could color or
paint their name vertically on it and add stickers and marks as time
progressed. What a fun take home at the end of the year.
Not in EMS but missing it dearly as the new Bishop.

Hello again,
Thanks for the idea and thought. You really touched my heart with your
comments. I certainly feel renewed and with enough strength to keep going.
I love these two young people and they know I sincerely do.
Thanks again!
