My first year of teaching I didn't know about using class officers. It wasa
lot of work every morning. Then my second year we had a part of our summer
prep used to discuss class officers and their importance. It was a blessing.
I have used them for the last 13 years.

This year I have 23 so it is essential to have their help. It can be a
rotation after a quarter, semester, or left in for the year. Observing how they
function will tell you when a change needs to be made. Callings and
releasings come at varying times in our lives.

This is how my class officers are utilized this year:

President (who is approved by their bishop prior to calling them). They
conduct the opening of class.
1st Counselor - Conducts in absence of President. Also over class DSR
(Daily Scripture Reading).
2nd Counselor - Conducts in absence of first two. Over my audio/visual
operation.
Secretary - In charge of daily attendance roll. Conducts in absence of first
three.
Pianist - I have 5 this year who can play (with 2 more who know 1 song each,
so they play for those hymns). I went the last three years with no
pianists, so this is heaven!
Zone 1 through 4 Captains - In charge of scores from SM chases, games, etc.
2 Acquisition Monitors - Handout glue quotes, handouts, pens, glue sticks.
Devotional Chairman - In charge of seeing that monthly calendar is filled
out, that each is getting a turn before we start back through, and daily listed
on chalkboard with next days also listed.
Prayers Chairman - in charge of seeing that monthly calendar is filled out
and students are rotating turns with an Invocation and Benediction daily
listed on board.
Music Chairman - in charge of seeing that a conductor and a daily hymn or
Children's Songbook favorite is rotated on a calendar and then listed on
chalkboard for that day.
Hymnal Monitors (2) - in charge of seeing that everyone has a hymnal or the
Children's Songbook favorites folder is on each desk for the day. (I ask what
is their favorite song from Primary each year. I add any new ones to
folders that have the 3 brads in them so we have easy access to them for those who
aren't familiar with the words.)
SM Poster Chairman - In charge of placing the weeks new SM poster in front
of room. These are full size posterboards that are printed by a printing
company in Bountiful, Utah for the seminaries to use. They are nice with large
black print.
Events Chairman - In charge of listing on board upcoming activities, SND's,
games, concerts, plays, scores, and also keeps a history for the class.
Birthday Chairman - I use the birthday cards from Ken Alford's Seminary
Resource Manuals that match the years course of study. This person takes the
card (which I photocopy on special paper and gets everyone but the birthday
person to sign the card secretly.

Hope this makes sense and that it can help you. It is a big load off my
shoulders and it's their class so they feel responsible and so far are doing
great. It's adaptable for various class size. This is my next to largest class
I've taught.
