[Teachldsseminary] Chat - Reverence question

Rick,

I don't have any quotes handy, except President Packer's "reverence invites
revelation" (Ensign, November 1991), but I'm happy to share a family
experience we had several years ago. When our oldest son was a deacon, one
of the current "styles" among his peers was to have bleachedr hair. He
wanted to do that and it came up at a dinner table discussion. During the
conversation on whether that was appropriate or not for a priesthood holder,
his six-year-old brother said (in effect), "When Tyler was passing the
sacrament with his bleached hair, I didn't feel very reverent. I couldn't
think about Jesus when I just wanted to stare at his hair." We thought that
was pretty profound! (And, yes, our son did bleach his hair a couple of
times with the stipullation that it was done on Monday so that it would be
toned down for Sunday.)

But one point I try to bring up when we have a family/class discussion on
reverence (it's one of those topics you get to do over and over!!) is that
not only do we have a responsibility to be reverent ourselves, we have a
responsibility to not prevent someone else from feeling the Spirit because
of our actions. Often it's a concept that students haven't even thought of
before.

Hope this helps,
Becky in FL
