Hi all,
I had a great lesson with my kids today and thought I'd share. As I prepared
this lesson, I was rather stumped about what to do with D&C 23 and was
grateful that D&C 24 was longer and 'meatier' and we could spend most of our
time on it. Turned out that we spent over 1/2 and hour on 23 and barely had
time for 24 (I teach for 45 mins). Just goes to show, you never know where
the Spirit will lead. I started with a 'who am I' game to help the kids get
to know the 5 men talked about in 23. I got most of my info from the 'people
cards' oin the filing cabinet and added a bit and changed the wording so
that it wouldn't be obvious who I was. The clues got easier as I went along.
What surprised me was how fast they got the ones I thought were hard and how
much trouble they had with ones I thought were easier. No one got Samuel. We
read the section and the kids just took off. They were interrested in why
Oliver Cowdery was told to avoid pride, why Joseph Knight Sr got such
different counsel from the others. We talked about all of that and I brought
out that Heavenly Father knows our strengths and weaknesses. It amazed me
because my class really doesn't discuss. It's like pulling teeth. But this
section really spoke to them - even if I wasn't sure about the merits of it.
It's lessons like this I need to hold on to - it gets me through the days
when I'm the only one to open my mouth without a pry bar!
Dana
