My son (who comes home next Tuesday!!!!!) was told not to bring any 
electronic devices like that on his mission to Chile!

I think that they are permitted on a mission ...at least in some ...unless
we had a missionary who was openinly not obeying the rules. He had his
scriptures, the hymns, a map, would take directions, notes etc. with it. I
think he also had some books on it as well. I saw this elder use the palm
pilot almost every time he was around me (typically only on Sundays and some
Wednesdays.) But, I guess my assumption is that he took it on appointments
etc.
