Debbie,
I only make a rough outline of the points I want to cover and how I plan on 
covering them. It helps keep me focused and makes it easier for me to pull 
the lesson back on topic if we get sidetracked for a few minutes. My outline 
looks something like this:
scripture block:
principle:
method: object lesson: repentance
            discussion v. 1- 10
etc.
I don't make up an entire word for word lesson plan. You are right, the 
reading alone takes up a lot of my time.
