[Teachldsseminary] REQUEST: Disabilities with mental issues

I think that if you do what has been suggested before and talk with your son's Seminary teacher then the experience will more than likely be a good one for him. There are so many things you can learn from being in an actual class. Last year was my first year teaching but most of the teachers have been teaching for several years with great insight into the scriptures and their meanings as well as historical back ground. Because he has been home schooled you would both have a great experience together as you study the scriptures. However if he can stand everything that goes on in class the experience of group learning might be good for him.

We had a student with some special needs here and made arrangements for that student to attend class two to three times a week and then home school the rest of the time. On the days were there are loud activities with running and shouting, like the game days, he may want to do a game at home with you. Since he is so comfortable with you he will let you know if it is just too much for him. Of course as his parent the spirit will guide and direct you for his good and as you move forward you will know in your heart what to proceed with and what not to continue with.

  Good luck!

Speaking of disabilities... I'm not a seminary teacher, but I wonder what to
do when my 11yo is of age to attend. What dpes a parent do when their child
is intellectually and emotionally several years younger than the average
seminary student? My son is a spiritual giant, with the faith of a prophet
and the heart of an angel, and literally doesn't sin. We've yet to have to
reprimand him for knowingly doing something wrong. He is just so GOOD, and
doesn't understand why other people choose to make bad choices! Well,
actually, something happened this week to help him understand what
temptation might feel like to the rest of us... He had told his big
brother... who returns home from his mission in six weeks... that he would
wait to see the new Pirates movie, so that they could see it together. Josh,
who had been dying to see it, was able to hold out for over 24 hours before
caving in. He really didn't stand a chance, with all of the ads on tv,
billboards, McDonald's, and sisters and friends raving about it! Plus, we,
his parents, told him that we believed his big brother would want him to go
to the movie, rather than suffer so much!... But two days after having seen
the movie, Josh asks, deeply serious... "Do you think I need to go talk to
the Bishop?... I feel so guilty!" I'm thinking that this has been a good
experience for him, so that he can better understand what temptation feels
like and why people might choose to make bad choices.

Anyway, that's the kind of child we have... He would be a wonderful
spiritual influence to others in a seminary class, but I wonder how much of
it he would understand. He is homeschooled, because he needs one-on-one
attention to understand things... otherwise all that is talked about goes
over his head. On top of this, he has sensory integration dysfunction... he
can't deal with chaos, crowds, too much lighting, noise, etc. The SID we are
getting a handle on and by the time he goes to seminary he should be okay, I
think... but the other stuff... I just don't know whether to even send him
or not, or if we should just do home study together. What do you, as
teachers, suggest?

(BTW, if he attended seminary, it would be down at the local high school, as
we live in SLC...)

Shalom u'vracha!
