It will be well worth the 5 hours drive to take your kids to Martin's Cove. I wish we lived close enough! Well, maybe not since we are going out in our shirt sleeves here in TN!
We took our family there about 8 years ago when we lived in West Jordan and it was great. They had handcarts there you can take along the trail and the feeling is so special when you go down into the area where so many died. They won't let you take the handcarts down there and they ask you to take off your hat to show respect. The man who owned the land could tell that area was sacred ground. He told his sons never to work the land there. It is such a wonderful story and the couple missionaries do such a great job of telling it.
Maybe you could have a continuing competition and the winning zones get to ride in the handcarts while the loosing zones have to pull them. That would actually be backwards because the handcarts are horrible to ride in. I rode in one about 3 seconds before I made them stop and let me out!
We were able to camp out in a field nearby. I don't know if they still allow camping but that would be an additional way to bring about the pioneer spirit for the trip (and save $$)
If someone else has been there more recently than I have they might be able to help more.
