Laura,
I am a substitute teacher and often only have less than an hour to prepare a
lesson to teach all day. Today I started Section 69 with the historical
background, then had the students read the entire section (popcorn scripture
reading--one student reads a verse, then calls upon a classmate to read the
next one [the major drawback of being a substitute at a school where there
are over 1500 hundred LDS students is not knowing all their names]), which
led into discussing the importance of writing down the history. We then
read off the board the two quotes from Pres. Kimball. Since we live here in
Utah, many students have done the handcart trek, with this being the 150
year mark of the handcart companies, I asked them to relate their
experiences they had. Some were assigned names of people who actually made
the trek. They compared what they experienced with what the pioneers wrote
about and had a profound appreciation for what the pioneers went through.
We discussed many different ways of writing our histories. There is the
journal writing--many shared their feelings how wonderful it was for them to
go to their journal and know what they had done on a certain date, or to be
able to look back to see what happened when, to witness their own growth,
etc. Some of the students are in to scrapbooking, and they have lots of
photos with stories along with them. Others have collected family stories,
recipes, etc. and put them into a book. Some have audio tapes of deceased
grandparents. Others have family movies.
We then talked/shared stories of first relative to join the Church and the
students' favorite scripture passages and it ended up being almost like a
testimony meeting.
I have a "heads up" for tomorrow so I plan on starting Section 70 with 11
blank spaces on the board. I'll have 10 questions that they will pull out
of a bag. If the student answers the question correctly, then they can
select a space to have the letter revealed. Hopefully it won't take all of
the questions to figure out the word. The first to correctly guess the word
(stewardship) will get a miniature candy bar. All of the answers can be
found in the heading and Section 70.
The questions are:
1. How many special conferences were held the first two weeks of
November 1831?
2. What did Joseph Smith refer to as "the foundation of the Church in
these last days, and a benefit to the world"?
3. What two men mentioned in Doctrine and Covenants 69:1-2 are also
mentioned in Doctrine and Covenants 70:1-5"?
4. What were Joseph Smith, Martin Harris, Oliver Cowdery, John Whitmer,
Sidney Rigdon, and William W. Phelps appointed and ordained to be?
5. What did the Lord say he would require of these men "in the day of
judgment"?
6. What was to be done with the surplus from the sale of the Book of
Commandments?
7. How many of us are given responsibilities in the kingdom of God?
8. Who is exempt from accountability for his stewardship?
9. Who is "worthy of his hire"?
10. What does the Lord say will be withheld if we are not equal in
temporal things "and this not grudgingly"?
Hopefully, this will lead into a discussion regarding stewardship. Hope
this helps you.
Penny
