If you have read President Packer's Book "Teach Ye Diligently" he is
a master in the art of using "proper" stories as analogies and
encourages the development of this in teaching the gospel. Obviously
he uses Christ as the example to emulate. He has learned himself and
encourages us to make up or find ones that will work for a lesson we
are preparing to give. Yes we do need to be careful of the doctrines
being taught absolutely correct. That is our charge. But a story is
a story and it is meant to tell, teach or entertain, uplift, etc..
and can be very effective in teaching. That is exactly what has been
submitted by individuals just like you or I to the Ensign, The New
Era or any of the mormon journals, etc. that are available through
the links on our CES website. Some are true and some are not. Some
we can draw parallels to the gospel with if we are creative? All
things testify of Christ, and the best teachers are constantly on the
lookout... regardless of their source. Thirteenth Article of Faith
as our guide. Just listen to our prophets speak and how they have
mastered this art. The great master is the Savior Himself... the
greatest storyteller of them all, but of course in his day they
called them parables.

I think you have to be very careful with stories like "The Room"; kids
(people in general) tend to remember the sensationalized aspects of a
story, and
even though you may stress that it's not doctrinal those images
become part of
the way they understand a doctrine. Is it really worth our precious
teaching
time if it's something that has to have a disclaimer? Why not only
teach
doctrinally sound lessons? There are plenty of stories and examples
from the
scriptures, general authorities, and even New Era and Ensign articles.
