I just received this email from a friend of mine, and I thought it applied
perfectly to the discussion on "The Room". If you look at it carefully,
that story does try to motivate righteousness by inducing guilt. Also,
FWIW, it is from a non-LDS source. http://www.ylcf.org/newattitude/

Forwarded with permission:
"We had stake conference today. We had Elder Bruce Porter of the Seventy as
our visiting authority. Last night at the adult session he talked about not
feeling guilty. He said that we should not ever come away from Church
meetings feeling guilty. That isn't the Lord's way. We should not use
guilt as a way to get others to do anything. We should be positive &
uplifting & comforting in all our interactions with each other. He said
that the Holy Ghost is "The Comforter" and we should be able to go to Church
& feel that comfort. He also talked about us being instruments of the Holy
Ghost in bringing that comfort to others, by our kind words & gentle
actions.

"He said that we should NOT use guilt to get each other to do anything, re:
the scripture in D&C about use of priesthood authority - reproving betimes
with sharpness "when moved upon by the spirit" but afterward showing forth
an increase in kindness, less he esteem thee to be his enemy. We should use
gentleness & kindness & love & praise (when appropriate). We should
encourage & help each other along. L.T.
