Hi Karen,

This is a great idea. If you would like to share, I would love a copy of your 5 x 5 scripture application card.

Thanks,
Sharon

Subject: [Teachldsseminary] Christmas Idea - Advent Calendar

We were asked to come to Seminary training on Thursday night with a
Christmas idea to share with the other teachers. I've been wanting to do an advent
calendar and have viewed the sites that were suggested but I couldn't make
anything fit - Then I had an ah-ha moment.

25 days to Christmas = 25 Scripture Mastery verses with personal and
missionary application. So this is what I am doing. Gosh, I hope this is an
original idea, and someone hasn't already done this and it is sitting in the
archives!

Anyway - I am reproducing on card stock one of the pictures of Christ's
birth from the Gospel Picture Kit - I'm not sure if I'll do #200 or #201 - I'm
leaning toward 201, but I wish it was in color.

On a separate sheet of card stock I'll have 5 rows of 5 squares with the
personal application suggestions - or missionary application suggestions - that
are on the back of the Scripture Mastery cards. For example - square one
will have "Bear your testimony this Sunday in Fast and Testimony meeting that
Joseph Smith did see the Father and the Son." - BTW Square one will be opened on
Friday, Dec. 1st, so that challenge will work - or you can use the
missionary application and put "Using the Joseph Smith story, teach a friend or a
nonmember that revelation has not ceased in the latter days." That challenge
could be the goal for that day.

I will cut 25 "windows" in the picture that will line up with the 25 squares
on the second sheet and number them - 1 through 25. Each day the student
will open a window and read the daily challenge.

I'll have a Christmas song to go along with opening the calendar challenge.
I may have her (I have one student) report the next day on what happened
with the challenge and use that for our devotionals during the time we're doing
the calendar. I'm not sure yet. I'm still trying to work out the kinks.

Here's where I need your help. What would you do with the weekend days?
Would you open two windows on Fridays and Mondays? Three windows on Friday to
have the challenge for Sat and Sun to work on over the weekend? Would you do
this in class or give the kids the advent calendars to take home and maybe
do it with their family?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Karen Johnson
