[Teachldsseminary] QUES: Section 63

I spent a lot of time on this lesson and this quote. It was excellent
insight into what taking the Lord's name in vein really is. Here are some
ideas:

#3 - Other ministers of our day speak without authority or perform an
ordinance without the priesthood. Some of the "space doctrine" we sometimes
hear even in the church without the scriptures or prophet to back it up.

#4 - Any time we set at naught our covenants and don't agree with something
the Bishop asks us to do would be an example of taking his name in vein.
Bad mouthing any leaders over us.
Other examples brought up we talked about were: keeping the Sabbath Day
holy only while at church and then not the rest of Sunday as an example.
Youth who set aside the Especially for Youth pamphlets and dress immodestly
or date early are doing their own things.

I had asked for a profanity object lesson to go along with this and a
teacher sent this.

PROFANITY OBJECT LESSON: Have a few students come to front of the class.
Give them a chocolate Oreo cookie with white frosting in the middle (the
original kind).

Have them twist off the top. Tell the class that when good (uplifting,
clean, correct....) words are used, it is like eating the white part of the
cookie. Have the students scrape off the frosting and eat it. Then have them
smile big for the class. There will be no discoloration.

Then tell the class that when they choose to use words that are profane,
vulgar, demeaning, .... it is like eating the dark cookie. Have the students
eat the chocolate parts, then smile big. Their teeth will be stained dark.
Not so attractive! This is like their reputation; like their soul; .... It
becomes stained and unattractive.

I hope this doesn't appear as sounding stupid, but........

As I prepared to teach Section 63, it referred me to the student manual
324-325. It referenced James E. Talmage for Section 63:61-64. It
talked about other ways we take the Lord's name in vain other than
profanity. I wanted to discuss this with my girls and give a few
examples, but when it came to reasons 3 & 4, I was stumped. I didn't
want to appear like I didn't know what I was talking about so I asked my
family to help me out. They weren't sure either. Has anyone taught
this yet and used this reference? I'll quote what is written just in
case you don't have the reference immediately available. Any help with
examples for numbers 3 and 4 would be great.

Thanks,
Debbie

*D & C 63:61-64, "Let All Men Beware How They Take My Name in Their Lips"

To take the name of the Lord in vain is often thought of only as
profanity. Elder James E. Talmage offered a broader definition:

"1. We may take the name of God in vain by profane speech.
 2. We take it in vain when we swear falsely, not being true to our
oaths and promises.
 3. We take it in vain in a blasphemous sense when we presume to speak
in that name without authority.
 4. And we take his name in vain whenever we wilfully do aught that is
in defiance of his commandments, since we have taken his name upon
ourselves."
