The Lord expectations for his daughters Notes from symposium talk by
Mary Jane Woodger 1998
(She talk about Emma, and the kind of person she was)
Teach YW that Emma was a role model. (Christ is the Ultimate)
Role Models- 1998 worlds version:
Sexy, attractive, aggressive, finds men easy to manipulate, possessive,
has a male secretary. Etc.
Now thats what the world tells me is a successful woman.
Another role model- a super Mormon mother. Cooks like
Taylor for
Nordstrom or could be, up @ 4 am to bake bread etc. Ever meet someone
like that? Me either and if I did Id probably hate her. Neither of those
lists is what the Lord has in mind for his daughters. You can find what
the Lord wants for his daughters in Sec. 25.
Vs. 16 says this (when Heavenly father uses 2 verilys you perk up)
Notice in vs 3 what the Lord calls me ( two adjectives)
ELECT LADY (define both of them)
15 point of Femininity (a dying virtue) An Elect Lady is:
#1 Vs 2 VIRTUE relates to chastity but more than chastity. People in the
world would think others are weird if there were 30 and still chaste.
Teach truths when teaching about chastity (NOT teaching about wrong
behavior) Teach them what a wonderful temple marriage is like. Refer: by
Jeffery R., Holland Souls, symbolism, and sacrament
Virtue is every thing lovely, of good report or praiseworthy.
Teach them they can make a good report to Priesthood leaders when in the
future they are asked certain questions about Temple worthiness and they
can answer correctly.
#2 sins are forgiven an Elect Lady doesnt have to be perfect-going to
make mistakes on a regular basis. Emma had faults biggest one was pride.
We get down on ourselves because we arent perfect. Lord wants us to know
we can be forgiven. Pre Hinckley said, Please dont nag yourselves with
thoughts of failure, if you do the best way that you know how the Lord
will accept your best efforts.
Thats what the Lords trying to say.
#3 MURMUR NOT. Vs 4 What was w/held (plates). What do women murmur about
in our generation?
# 4 vs 5 according to the Lord- when gifts were given out theres one
gift given to women TO COMFORT. The Lord would have us develop that
gift. That doesnt mean everyone comforts in the same way.
#5 vs 5 MEEK- confused with weakness. Best definition= power under
control. Savior showed this as He was being accused he stood there and
doesnt say a word when he could have called down legions. Ex. Parents who
just have to give THE LOOK and the kids know theyre in trouble. World
would say power is_ aggressive, sexual . YW have a great power- meekness.
#6 vs 6 stays committed in her relationships. Physically and emotionally
#7 vs. 7 EXPOUND SCRIPTURES
bothered by those people who say I dont know anything about the
scriptures The lord makes now exceptions of gender for not knowing his
word if weve had every opportunity. He wants us to be scholars so we can
teach our children and all others we come in contact with.
#8 vs 8 LEARNS MUCH, wants to improve her mind. Emma wrote Hymns.
Constant desire to learn and grow. Teach YW when they say I just want to
grow up and get married that is what we really want them to do but they
can also learn much.
#9 DOESNT FEAR
#10 vs 10 LAYING ASIDE WORLDY THINGS
#11 vs 10SEEKING FOR BETTER THINGS
Theres more to life then what the world is shouting in our ears.
#12 vs 13 LIFT UP HEART AND REJOICE cant be happy all the time. But not
have self pity
#13 vs 14 delights in others- their accomplishments. Should not compete
with others.
#14 vs 13 CLEAVE TO COVENANTS sacrament- knows the words and lives by them
during the week. Goes to Temple
#15 KEEPS COMMANDMENTS IF (see promise.)
Theres nothing in Section 25 about
thin bodies etc. Teach YW the role
model of the Savior and what he expects.
