We are, of course, all entitled to personal revelation regarding our class,
from what principles to cover in the lesson to whether or not to bring
treats, to what seating arrangements we should employ. This will vary from
year to year and from teacher to teacher.
I hope that everyone will continue to send their ideas to the list and share
with us what has worked and what hasn't. We can then use that gift of
discernment to determine what to save and what to delete.
For me, I have not used a seating chart. However, I found that when I
needed one, to start it was too punitive and was seen as a negative
influence in class. I can see the benefit of having a seating chart,
especially one that is done with the purpose of fellowship and fun. It can
always be discontinued if it is not bringing the desired result. I teach
all the freshmen in our stake. Some of them don't know each other prior to
Seminary. I am going to try a seating chart, as suggested, using different
groupings such as type of pet, number of siblings, etc.
Last year, I started the year with 36 students. There wasn't a room in the
church big enough for a semi-circle of 36 students. This year, I am
anticipating 15-20, I never know for sure until the first day of class.
