Kath--
I felt JOY when I read your ideas! What a great seminary class you must
have! I only have 9 in my class, but I'm going to think about ways I can
incorporate your fun ideas into the seating arrangements. How do you group
them? -- at tables? with chairs? I always struggle with the best way to
seat my students so that I can give each of them my attention. Also, I have
never given them a seating arrangement before, but always let them sit where
they want. I'm thinking they will be resistant to this...any ideas how to
start so they will cooperate? Thanks for any help you can give me!

At the beginning of each school/seminary year I hand out a survey to my
students. It's different every year. I ask all kinds of random questions,
about themselves, favorite things, families, hobbies, etc.
I use this survey during the year to arrange them in groups (I change
them every two weeks). For instance; the three groups might be, 1) those
that like sugared cereal, 2) those that like healthier cereal, and 3) those
that prefer hot cereal (this, from their response to: What kind of cereal
do you prefer in the morning). Another time the three groups might be 1)
those whose fav. scripture is in the Bible, 2) fav. scripture is in the Book
of Mormon, or 3) fav. scripture is in the Doc. and Cov.. Another example is
1) those who like chocolate w/nuts 2) chocolate w.o./nuts or 3) don't like
chocolate. You get the idea!
I have put them into groups in alphabetical order according to their
middle names, or the last letter of their names, or birth order, or how many
letters are in their full names, etc., etc..
Here's the fun part, I offer bonus points (or sem. bucks, or beans,
whatever our current incentive is), to the first group that can figure out
why they are in the same group. This way they try to get to know each other
and work together, they are always curious to find out why they are
together. We spend very little time in class discussing their guesses.
They are allowed to ask yes or no questions before seminary starts. There is
more discussion after class in the foyer as they try to find out why they
are grouped together.
One time they were grouped according to their pets. 1- dogs, 2- cats, 3-
other or none. They could not figure it out. I told them I would give them
a big fat hint each day, but they would have to pay attention. One day I
just barked right out loud while they were doing some writing. The next day
I meowed in the middle of my lesson. It took a few days and they finally
figured it out.
I love to have JOY in Seminary and this is one way that we do that and
work toward being a zion class.
Seminarily yours,
