[Teachldsseminary] Teach: Classroom Seating

The first day of seminary, I make oversized name tags in bright and
welcoming colors and place them on the tables so when the students enter the
room there is no mistaking where they are assigned to sit. I always seat my
students boy/girl/boy/girl, etc. This seems to cut done alot on any
problems. I don't say anything about the seat assignments and no one has
ever asked - but then I teach freshman and sophomores and they don't know
anything different. These large name tags also help me the first week as I
am getting to know the students names!

AFter a week or two of seminary, after I have gotten a feel for the
students I then make a few callings - giving them stewardships over
different areas of our class. One of these is the seating chart. I choose a
very responsible student to do this and I give him specific instructions on
how I want it to be done... viz. I want the boy/girl seating continued, I
want the chart changed weekly and it is taped to the door of the room so
that the students can see it as soon as they come in. Sometimes, if my
chairman is late for semianry on monday morning the students will just stand
around waiting to see where they will be sitting that week, it is kind of
funny, they look lost without their seating chart (one year I had a really
on the ball chairman and he had the next weeks seating chart ready on
Friday, he would just give it to me so I could put it up on Monday, because
I always take down the chart on Friday, so it is not on the door during
Sunday meetings.) I instruct him to use variety - stir the pot, so to
speak.

I draw a diagram of the classroom seating arrangement, a sort of fill in the
blank page and make copies of these and then give these copies to the
student that is going to be the "seating charter chairman!". This way he
can take them home if he chooses to prepare each weeks new chart. If I
notice that the seating arrangement is not working I just have to mention it
to the chairman and he makes the necessary changes for the next week. Or,
if, as the year develops, I notice that some kids just cannot be close
together - i will quietly ask the chairman never to put those two students
near each other.

Occasionally, on a Friday or a special lesson I will take down the chart and
just say "sit wherever you like" and then they get to sit by their friends
and they like that!! I have only been teaching for 4 years, but this has
worked for me.......... d
