Server Upgrade completed

July 21st, 2007

I have been planning this web server upgrade for several months.  Our old web server was really outdated hardware, a simple Celeron single core processor with 512MB of memory. During many tasks, it simply could not deal with the demand our services put on it.  It was more than capable when we first started using it in 2005, but site mergers, new site features (e.g. image gallery, support center) that are database driven, and advent of digital downloads all combined to overwork our lowly but trustworthy server.  Even late at night, doing automated site backups was taking longer and longer.  I sure those folks down under, who are hitting the server when I am doing most of our maintenance tasks, must have wondered some times what they had done to deserve such slow service.

NOTE: more than just latter-dayvillage.com runs on this server.  I get to move more than three dozen web sites of various shapes and sizes.  But I really only worry about LDV, it’s larger in size and complexity than all the others combined.

When our data center provider, theplanet.com started advertising specials on new servers, we (Debra went along with my recommendation) decided to take the plunge and upgrade.  Our new server is a dual processor hoss with 2GB of memory and three times the disk space. The drives are faster and have faster controllers with more cache memory.  This means we will be able to accommodate an ever growing customer base and site complexity.

These changes are never easy; they are best done by people smarter than me.  It’s Saturday morning and working with our datacenter support staff, most of the problems have been resolved. The Internet is really kludgy in the way it handles site changes; your browser and email programs are at the mercy of your ISP when it comes to finding our new location.  Of course there all kinds of hoops we have to jump through in configuring our services so that we do not appear as a spammer, your email server needs to be able to trust giving us your email messages and vice versa.

Ok, Saturday late afternoon and everything appears to be working EXCEPT for LDV email. The server is rejecting anything coming in.  OK, more time on the phone with datacenter support.

Fixed, latter-dayvillage.com will now accept email.  I wish I had spent more time learning Linux system administration….I am not a sysadmin, I merely play one on TV.

The seminary list is back up and running, sales cart and membership systems OK, knowledgebases, image gallery, forums, support center, all OK.

I apologize for any inconvenience this ‘upgrade’ caused our users, but we will all be better off for it.

You have to see it - all scouting leaders will love this Boy Scout Cub Scout clipart / scrapbook collection by Nicole Whitehead - now featured in the Village Download Depot Club. Perhaps my favorite aspect of this collection is the character set - you know the red number patches sewn on uniforms for troop identification - Nicole has created a set of number patches AND alphabet patches for this collection that you can use for any scout title and achieve instant recognition that it is a Boy Scout or Cub Scout event/project. The entire collection is just superb. Come see it! The patches character set is included in the collection, AND an additional character set by Nicole - Twig Font - is one of our wonderful July fonts.

Over the weekend we upgraded the software used to power our knowledgebases

Most of the changes are for the administrators, but one major end user feature was improved. There is now an Advanced Search option that appears after the search function is used.  Advanced search allows you to narrow the search by selecting one or more categories in which to resource.  You can also choose to exclude categories from the search.

Prior to this upgrade some search phrases would return a VERY large set of articles. Those searches can now be narrowed to a set of categories. You select those in two ways:

  • Use the CTRL key + mouse click to select several categories from the list.
  • Use the SHIFT key + mouse to select a range of categories.
  • You can also select a range using SHIFT and additional categories using the CRTL key.

OT SM Magazine Ads

New in our shopping cart! If you like Mormonads, you will love Courtney White’s new Old Testament Scripture Mastery Magazine Ads! She has designed a photographic poster for each of the 25 Old Testament SM verses that powerfully depict the messages in these important scriptures for our youth! The collection includes versions with and without the text of the scripture and scripture references, and can be used in countless ways. PS: there is a link on the product page to view of the entire collection.

Debra conducted a seminary customer survey this summer and based on some of that feedback she created a set of large Scripture Mastery posters for LDS seminary classroom/teaching areas, but not as large as others on the market. The posters will be ready to ship around August 1st.  Our production run is limited, so we are accepting advance orders.  Order now to get yours!

Barb Gardner, our Annotated Scriptures author, created some innovative lds seminary scripture mastery tools, which we now offer in your shopping cart: Scripture Mastery wheels. The instant download package contains four MS PowerPoint files that enable teachers and students to play a version of Scripture Mastery Wheel of Fortune.

  • DCWheel.ppt   DC Church History
  • EzekielsWheel.ppt Old Testament
  • GoodNewsWheel.ppt New Testament
  • NephisWheel.ppt          Book of Mormon

A computer with MS PowerPoint loaded* and a display device are required for classroom use, but play is simple; a single student or a whole classroom (divided into teams) are involved together. Play as you would the regular wheel of fortune game, rotating between players or teams. Sounds effects guide players as to whether points are earned or Bankrupt is hit(explosion sound). LDS Seminary students can learn or review SM verses while having a blast (oops, pardon the pun)!

To view on a larger screen, you simply hook up the seminary classroom’s TV video/audio in jacks to the computer’s video/audio out jacks with an appropriate cable.

*NOTE: if you do not own MS PowerPoint, you can still play using Microsoft’s free PowerPoint Viewer. See the product page for a Viewer download link.
